"You talked to our son yet?" Red asked from where he was strewn on the couch, alternating between watching the game and dealing with the company email correspondence which kept cropping up on his tablet.
His jaw was working open to protest, right up until her last remark. The click of his teeth left an audible echo as he snapped them together like the wolf he was at heart, "And yet you insist on acting out the worst of her. Do whatever the hell you want, Violet. No one can stop you doing it anymore than they could your own son."
Red was already turning from the room and out the back even as he said it.
It'd been too long since he'd taken time to actually visit the stables, anyway. Kestrel probably wouldn't even answer a summon at this point.
"Oh is that what I said?" Red retorted a bit snarkily as he strode through the room to step out back, leaving Violet to her meeting. He wasn't going to fight about the purchase itself. The whole family had been saying for years that she needed to open one, as much for her own pleasure as her stress baking.
He stayed out back to smoke a slow cigarette, looking out over the stables where the hired hands were working through their task list. It wasn't until a few minutes after he heard the distant beep of the coffee machine that he would head back into the house, remnants of the cigarette still burning between his fingers as he went to the kitchen to pour a cup.
The lack of activity or attention from Violet didn't stand out too much to Red that morning. He figured she was still pissed with him. He should've known better than to bring up what he did the previous day. Also should have known to stop sooner. But as he was prone to doing, Red had sunk his heels in and dug himself deeper.
So he just went into the kitchen to get a pot of coffee started. He was just setting it to brew when the maid made the announcement in the dining room.
"Realtor?" Red asked as he came out to investigate, finding the man they generally used to scope out properties they were interested in acquiring there with Violet, "What are you buying?"
