"Dispatch called and said we have an early one. Some sort of shoot out downtown that they'd like us to finish off," she said simply ignoring the previous night.

Alice watched Seth go to bed. Eventually she got up and put away or threw out the food that wasn't eaten. She would then settle on the couch to sleep instead of joining her husband in bed. In the morning she was up early and dressed to go into work, sitting at the table with a bowl of cereal.

Richie looked up from the couch. He had been hoping for a quiet afternoon. When Kaella walked in. She wasn't in her work clothes and she was home earlier than she should have been. "What happened?" he asked confused.

Alice huffed and pushed herself more into the couch as she lost her appetite sitting forward to set the half eaten food down and then sit back.

"You know me better than anyone else. We'll both know when I've had enough."

Richie and Kae had fallen into an odd sort of routine which was primarily avoidance unless they had to. Like when he had Penny clear the girls past discretions from the police database and got her valid ID and made his mom her guardian.
It had taken a few weeks before she got a job but she did which was a step in the right direction.
Richie was having to placate his girlfriend by going to her house after work a few nights a week instead of the other way around which made his days longer and longer, especially on nights that he had late work.
It was a day he had off so he was in his apartment when he heard the door slide open.

Alice looked up to him with this sad smile. "Then please don't treat me like I can't take care of myself out there."

"No Seth. I want to hear that you fucking trust me with a kid or not. I'm not sure you do and that fucking scares me."

"Tell me I'm lying Seth. Tell me that you wouldn't have put yourself there if I you hadn't known I was fucking with child," she said moving to get up with a strained grunt and hiss to face him. She wasn't pointing out that he hadn't gotten hurt tonight regardless of his gallant efforts.

"I'm pissed off because you did it because I'm pregnant, not because I needed your sudden gallantry."

"Because you don't trust that I can make a good decision for myself. We both fucking want this kid. Why do you have to be the only human meat shield?"

"Its what got me hurt again and you know it. I feel like it makes you happy that I'll be out of the field. I..." she shook her head. "For fuck's sake Seth. I feel like I can't trust you."

"Which is a half truth. You worried more than you trusted me today."

"Which means you won't trust me anymore," she said to him sadly looking up from her half eaten burrito to her husband. "I don't even think you fully trusted me tonight," she admitted. It had been the first time they found out she was pregnant.

"Maternity leave is basically retiring. You're never going to treat me the same in the field anymore," she said looking up to him. "You pushed me out of the way of that shot."

"Seth we can't circle around the subject of me not being a judge anymore."

"Right now? So I go back tomorrow? And the next day?"

"You say that now. But I fucked up tonight and you know its just fucking time."

Richie came back an hour or so later and went to take a shower himself. He didn't bother Kae but it was his day off so he went to watch a movie in his living room.

Richie walked back down the hall and paused in front of the door. He considered not saying anything and saying something before he finally just went back into his room and then left the apartment to go down the the gym as he had originally said he was going to do.
